The Cathwear garment can be utilized in post surgical recovery procedures relating to the bladder and/or prostate resulting in decreased movement of the indwelling urethral catheter, subsequently stabilizing the movement of indwelling urethral catheter will greatly reduce or eliminate irritation of the meatus.  The urethral meatus is the external orifice of the urethra, from which urine is ejected.

The Unisex Urethral Stabilization System is a full piece lower abdomen and extremity covering/garment that will house and support various urethral catheter bags. The Cathwear garment additionally provides 8-15mm/hg compression resulting is lower systemic ratios of edema.  The garment is comprised of a front, back, waistband and gusset, stationed on the inner to mid front right of the garment the Urethral Stabilizing System is attached by inline seam stitch.  The bottom front of the garment houses the outlet system and additional support. The middle inner front contains a small open ended pocket to house a thin sanitary pad to absorb post surgical drainage.

Urethral catheter care is a significant clinical issue because of widespread prevalence of catheter devices and with the increased aging of the population, use is expected to increase.

In nursing homes alone, in the United States, it is estimated that about 100,000 people use indwelling catheters.  This equates to approximately 10% of the residents utilizing urethral catheters can be short or long term use.

Duration of catheter use in-home settings may be rather long, with a median of 3-4 years, with some individuals using them for more than 20 years.

This places the catheter population at extreme risk for the onset of Meatal Stenosis.  Meatal Stenosis can be triggered by multiple factors; hygiene, stress, illness, re-insertion, etc.

Urethral catheter associated complications –

Prevalence of urethral catheter use and urinary tract infection (UTI) along with Meatal Stenosis are among the indicators used by the U.S. federal government to monitor quality of care in nursing homes.  Because a long-term indwelling urethral catheter contributes to associated morbidity and mortality, catheter use is closely monitored by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

Individuals using long-term urethral catheters are at risk for many serious complications, some of which may be life threatening, including pyelonephritis, bacteremia, and bladder cancer. In addition, this population is susceptible to chronic obstructions due to urethral calculi and to periurethral infections, including epididymitis and prostatitis in men.

Other than removal of the catheter, little is available to prevent Meatal Stenosis in this population. While bacteria are present in the urine of virtually all who have been catheterized for more than 30 days, the presence of bacteria may remain asymptomatic.

Long-term catheter users are in special need of catheter support because their quality of life may be strongly influenced by appropriate and effective catheter management. Adjusting to living with such a device is not always easy, and it often takes a year or more. The Unisex Urethral Stabilization System can facilitate this adjustment period by reducing the risk of infection, trauma and/or Meatal Stenosis.

Quality of life (QOL) can be significantly improved by positioning and compression promoting emptying of the bladder thus resulting in decreased urinary retention.
